Biography

Emmitta Jane Lewis

Digital Worlds Institute @ University of Florida

Emmitta was one of 9 chidren born into poverty, abuse and a dependence on welfare to survive. Her father was arrested for domestic abuse and her mother was depressed, hospitalized and unstable. When she was six years old, all of the children were given up for adoption then reclaimed. School, and a memorable first grade teacher, literally saved Emmitta's life. Ms. Delargy saw a light in the child she tutored in reading, penmanship and math, planting the seed for years of successful learning and habits, awards for art, French and honor classes through Junior High. By age 12, she was a child/adult providing stability and structure for her siblings, but always seeking her own stability. Entering the High School of Art and Design, with a major in Theater Arts and Illustration and a minor in Watercolor, she shone brightly, and won 2nd place in a school wide Arts Contest. Her brilliant success tipped an unstable mother over the edge. She attacked her daughter and drove her from the home.

Emmitta's next stop was a Youth Center called the DOOR. She was essentially homeless and wandering the city at 17. Fortunately, something inside drew her to the arts and video production. She became a photographer, then a graphic designer and has survived her emotional challenges with professional help. She is once again an honor student in pursuit of a BA in Digital Media, Game Design / Development and Animation at the University of Florida's Digital Worlds Institute - the 7th best school in the entire U.S. according to US News & World Report. "I would like to tell my story and the stories of other children with similar backgrounds in an effort to help children navigate the world of abuse better perhaps than I did thru my art, design and games and have a little fun along the way".
